My Winter White Dwarf hamster, Truffles, doing what she does best. As you can see in the video, I needed to make a more elaborate tube system so that she could get to the top "petting area" of the cage. I also replaced the wheel the cage came with, with a much quieter wheel, since the former wheel rattled (but didn't squeak). *Update* I am sad to say that today, Dec. 14, 2009, Truffles passed away. Apparently it got too cold, and my efforts to warm her back up did not suffice. She will be missed. RIP, Truffles. :'(

Christmas recipe ingredients:

Truffle Mixture:

• chocolate, bitter, plain or milk 225g (8 oz)
• double cream, 75 ml (3 fl oz)
• brandy, 75 ml (3 fl oz) or rum,orange liqueur, coffee liqueur, coconut liqueur

Rolled Truffles:

• cocoa powder
• chopped nuts
• coconut, dessicated or grated
• chocolate vermicelli or grated chocolate for rolling

Dipped Truffles:

• chocolate, plain, milk or white (350 g (12 oz) or composition of all three

Christmas recipe instructions:

1. Truffle Mixture: Add the cream to grated chocolate and melt in a bowl over water at boiling point, stirring until smooth. Allow to cool and thicken.
2. Add your alcohol of selection and whisk until the composition is strong adequate to stay 'up' when a beach of composition is pulled up by the whisk. Then put the composition into a shallow tin (covered) and cool till firm.
3. Rolled Truffles: Place teaspoonful size amounts of truffle composition onto a tray sprinkled with cocoa powder and roll into ball shapes. Alternatively you can substitute the cocoa with grated chocolate, chopped nuts, coconut, or chocolate vermicelli. Cool in a refrigerator for at least two hours.
4. Dipped Truffles: Roll the truffle composition into 2.5 cm (1 inch) size balls and frost overnight until rock hard. [If you wish you could push some edible decor into the balls before cooling, such as nuts, ginger or cherries.]
5. Prepare some melted chocolate over water at boiling point. If you can, check the climatic characteristic is in the range 46-49 degrees centigrade (115-120 F) or for white chocolate, 43 degrees centigrade.
6. Taking two or three truffles at a time, use cocktail sticks to dip them into the melted chocolate before placing them on non-stick paper. Change to a refrigerator for cooling for at least two hours to harden. Repeat for the remaining truffles.
7. Present the truffles in paper cases and store in boxes. Keep in a refrigerator for up to ten days.

Keeping pigs as pets can be fun, but you also need to be faithful with them when you feed them. They are basically very clean animals, and will not urinate or defecate on their bedding, but will do so in a projection of their pen, away from their bedding.

They also hate extreme weather conditions, be it cold winds and draughts or soaring temperatures and humidity. So ensure that their pens are draught-free and you are able to get a good circulation of air when temperatures rise. Pigs will tolerate temperatures in the middle of 12-26°C. However, for those who have chosen this option your pig is beyond doubt trainable with regards to using a cat litter tray. Pigs are the 5th most keen animals in the world, and therefore getting them to use a cat litter tray is no different to training a cat or a dog. You use the same methods. Start with some newspaper and move it closer to the litter box until the box is being used. Remember though that the approved cat litter box it too high for your pig. You will need something that is more shallow, more like 2 inches, and your will need to find these trays or convenient receptacles from your local hardware store. They will get used to walking with a lead and harness if you start with them at an early age.
